Natalie Portman To Star In ‘Pride & Prejudice & Zombies’!

Variety is reporting that Natalie Portman will star and produce the Jane Austen mash-up, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”, that shot to the top of the list of the New York Times Best Sellers list. P&P&Z (or whatever acronym you wanna give it) hit in April of this year and has caused a lot of praise and head-scratching. Also, it is exactly what you are thinking this is, with the notable addition of Chinese martial arts involved as well.

In the film Portman will play the main character Elizabeth Bennett, one of four sisters, who is particularly tough and adept at zombie slaying. While life seems to go on as usual inside the homes, outside the “dreadfuls” roam and maul people.

I actually have the book, and had given it a shot until I stopped about half way through. My problem really doesn’t fall on the idea, but rather the underlying story. I just can’t read Austen at this moment. Perhaps I will come back to it and finish the rest before the film releases. However, if you enjoy Austen, and are looking for a fresh take on her work(s) check out this Quirk Books production. Quirk Books has also published “Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters”.

Portman will produce through her handsomecharlie company along with Annette Savitch.

“Natalie and I are longtime passionate fans of Jane Austen’s books and this a fresh, fun and thought-provoking way to approach her work,” Savitch said. “The idea of zombies running rampant in 19th Century England may sound odd, but it lends a modern sense of urgency to a well known love story.”

Personally, I can’t believe this is actually happening. I had heard musings on it and even read articles about the far-off possibilities, but this just became a reality. I may not have been able to rip through the book as I had hoped, but I will definitely be lining up to see this film.
