Rumors: Malkovich, Hathaway For Spidey 4 Villains?

John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway could be in the next Spider-Man

Movieline is reporting that John Malkovich is in talks to become the Vulture in Sam Raimi’s upcoming “Spider-Man 4”. Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway would play Felicia Hardy, but would not turn into Black Cat. In this instance, she would become a new villain named the Vulturess.

Head spinning yet? Let’s break this down after the jump.

First, Malkovich would be a great cast choice to play the brilliant but advanced aged super-villain known as Adrian Toomes. Toomes uses a harness with wings that also aids his strength, vitality and nimbleness to overcome his age. Donned in green, he becomes the villain named Vulture.

Malkovich is old enough to pull off the villain, while he also has a delivery and acting chops to adequately capture Vulture’s personality.

Meanwhile, for Hathaway, this is an odd choice. We have seen casting against the grain before with Topher Grace as Eddie Brock who turned into Venom in “Spider-Man 3”. While the movie was admittedly poor, Grace did a good job in the role. However, the original Brock was always a stout, blonde haired jock who transformed into a bigger and stronger Venom.

In the Ultimate universe (a re-imaging of the various Marvel super heroes and villains) though, Brock was thin and brown-haired. Thus, we have a precedent of Raimi switching things up a bit.

Back to Hathaway, in the Ultimate storyline, Felicia Hardy is a short-haired brunette who wears a white-haired wig when she dons the Black Cat costume. So that lends itself to her possibly becoming Black Cat.

However, as Movieline mentions, she is rumored to become a new villain called the Vulturess. How she becomes a completely different villain is anyone’s guess at this point.

Hathaway has proven she is athletic enough to play the role, as evidenced by “Get Smart”. She also is a fine actress (Oscar-nom for “Rachel Getting Married”) and has the looks and charm to pull off a role that might demand her to become a seductive tease to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man.

While these could be two great casting choices, it once again leaves Dylan Baker (playing Dr. Curt Connors) to wonder if he will ever turn into The Lizard in the film.
