Gotta’ See Trailers: Tom Ford’s ‘A Single Man’

Months ago I had heard alot of buzz for “A Single Man” but I didn’t know it. How? Because I thought the buzz was in reference to the brand new Coen bros. film “A Serious Man”. After having seen “A Serious Man”, which was darkly humorous and unafraid to ask tough questions, I was scratching my head when I kept hearing things about “A Single Man” recently. I kept asking, “Don’t you mean ‘A Serious Man’?”

Turns out, they weren’t mistaken and were talking about “A Single Man”, and below is the first trailer to the film that has garnered quite a reputation since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. This is the directorial debut (something popular this year) of Tom Ford, who is a renowned American fashion designer who turned around Gucci after arriving at the company in 1994. Later, he left Gucci, created his own men’s clothing line, and now is trying his hand at film.

Colin Firth (“Bridget Jone’s Diary”) stars as a professor who has suddenly lost his significant other and struggles to find meaning in his daily life thereafter. Other headliners include Julianne Moore (you know her), Mathew Goode (“Watchmen”), and Ginnifer Goodwin (HBO’s Big Love and “He’s Just Not That Into You”). The film is based on a Christopher Isherwood novel of the same name and will see limited release Dec. 11.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

While the film is gathering Oscar buzz for Ford, Firth and Moore, I still don’t know what to make of it. There is no dialog in the trailer, obviously, and it seems to show off the gorgeous cinematography but there isn’t alot beyond that. I am certainly intrigued by the description of the book and the fact that the Weinstein company is behind it, so I will be keeping an eye on the film as it gets closer to release.
