Breakin’ News: ‘Lobo’ Gets Its Guy… Ritchie

Lobo24In even more comic book film news (as if there wasn’t enough this week- and it’s only Wednesday), Variety’s BFDealMemo blog reports that Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Holmes” and “Snatch”) has been pegged to direct the DC Comics property “Lobo”.

“Lobo” is the name of an interstellar, cigar smokin’, mercenary/bounty hunter alien anti-hero who rides a motorcycle, is seven feet tall, blue, and muscle bound. BFDealMemo says the story follows Lobo as he, “lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc. Lobo teams with a small town teenaged girl to stop the creatures.”

Wait a second. A teenaged girl teams up with Lobo?

lobo1 THAT Lobo? Well, this should be interesting.

Warner Bros. also are aiming for a PG-13 rating, which has been met with disdain from a few people. My view is that this is not a PG-13 property. Lobo is basically a dickhead and the comics generally show him rippin’ apart people in various ways (see above). That, of course, is when he isn’t hunting down Superman or Batman, a cross-over possibility that SciFi Squad hints at.

Don Payne has written the latest screenplay, having previously worked on “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”. Production will begin in early 2010.
