Breakin’ News: Disney To Purchase Marvel For $4 Billion

Well, this was unexpected. According to a press release by Disney, they will buy Marvel in a stock and cash transaction that is expected to reach $4 billion. This deal isn’t quite set in stone yet, but by all accounts it seems that the mouse-ears will own one of the largest entertainment brands in the world.

Hit the jump for an official statement by Marvel’s CEO and my thoughts.

“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”

disney_pictures_logo2With the planned Marvel films coming up, including “Iron Man 2” on May 7, 2010, this leaves a bit of a question as to where Disney might take the planned tie-ins and eventually “The Avengers” film. Although Disney is a fine brand, I hope they can keep their hands off enough to allow Marvel to continue to deliver the high quality films we have gotten so far from their film production division. That would include the smash hit “Iron Man” and the generally well-received “The Incredible Hulk”.

This kind of acquisition could have huge effects for both companies, including cross-brand promotion and perhaps a sharing of talent. Maybe Pixar can use their Midas-touch and work some magic at Marvel to reinvigorate the comics and animation line. Stay tuned for more information as it comes.
